MOCK NEWBERY 2014 CLUB BLOG POST #2

Hi everyone!  I hope you're reading, reading, reading!  I love these beautiful days when you can sit outside and read.  That's what I've been doing!  I finished up a book I read for my book club, lots of picture books, a professional book about teaching reading, and now I'm reading a book I've waited a long time to read by one of my favorite adult authors, Khaled Hosseini.  THEN I'm going to read some books for Mock Newbery!  I'm excited about this one coming out June 11:

Every Day After

GOODREADS SUMMARY:
Historical Fiction
Trouble has rained down on Lizzie Hawkins. Her daddy has deserted the family, her mama is silent with sadness, and the bank is after their house.

Daddy always said Lizzie was born to succeed, but right now she can't even hold on to her top grades or her best friend, Ben. Bratty newcomer Erin Sawyer has weaseled both away from Lizzie, but Erin won’t be satisfied until Lizzie is out of her hair for good, packed off straight to the nearest orphanage.

Still, Lizzie refuses to lose what's left of her family. With the bank deadline fast approaching, Erin causing strife at every turn, and Mama and Ben slipping away from her, Lizzie finds comfort writing in her journal and looking at Daddy's face in the heirloom locket he left her. She's keeping her head high and holding onto hope that Daddy returns on her twelfth birthday. Still, she can’t help wondering: Why did Daddy have to leave? And can I save us if he doesn't come home?

Times may be tough in Bittersweet, Alabama, but the unsinkable Lizzie Hawkins will inspire readers with her resilience and determination.

I got this one from the Symmes Library and will be reading it soon:

Doll Bones

FANTASY
Goodreads summary:

Zach, Poppy and Alice have been friends for ever. They love playing with their action figure toys, imagining a magical world of adventure and heroism. But disaster strikes when, without warning, Zach’s father throws out all his toys, declaring he’s too old for them. Zach is furious, confused and embarrassed, deciding that the only way to cope is to stop playing . . . and stop being friends with Poppy and Alice. But one night the girls pay Zach a visit, and tell him about a series of mysterious occurrences. Poppy swears that she is now being haunted by a china doll – who claims that it is made from the ground-up bones of a murdered girl. They must return the doll to where the girl lived, and bury it. Otherwise the three children will be cursed for eternity . . .

Jinx

FANTASY

Caleb picked this one up from the library, so thanks for giving us the heads up that it's a 2013 book!

Goodreads summary:

In the Urwald, you don’t step off the path. Trolls, werewolves, and butter-churn riding witches lurk amid the clawing branches, eager to swoop up the unwary. Jinx has always feared leaving the path—then he meets the wizard Simon Magnus.

Jinx knows that wizards are evil. But Simon’s kitchen is cozy, and he seems cranky rather than wicked. Staying with him appears to be Jinx’s safest, and perhaps only, option. As Jinx’s curiosity about magic grows, he learns to listen to the trees as closely as he does to Simon’s unusual visitors. The more Jinx discovers, the more determined he becomes to explore beyond the security of well-trod paths. But in the Urwald, a little healthy fear is never out of place, for magic—and magicians—can be as dangerous as the forest, and soon Jinx must decide which is the greater threat.

Sage Blackwood introduces a daring new hero for an innovative new world as Jinx is joined by friends, battles enemies, and discovers life beyond—and even within—the forest is more complex than he can imagine, and that the Urwald itself needs him more than he could ever guess.

  1. I just finished "All My Noble Dreams and then What Happens" by Gloria Whelan. It is historical fiction that takes place during England's rule over India. Although, it is a follow up to " Small Acts of Amazing Courage"', I had no trouble getting into the book. I really enjoyed it and can't wait to read the first one and will be eagerly awaiting the third installment.

    1. Angela,
Thank you for telling us about this book! I'll include it on the next Mock Newbery Club post! I didn't know there was a follow up to SMALL ACTS OF AMAZING COURAGE (I've had that on my TBR list for a long time and need to read it!) It's good to know that the follow up can be read independently! Keep reading and keep telling us about your books! :-)

I have just finished "Heaven is for Real" by Todd Burpo. It is a true story about a little boy named Colton Burpo. Colton is in dangerous surgery and is about to die. But the Lord's angles sing to him in heaven. Sounds crazy but you should really read it.
