Vote For Your 2013 Caldecott Winner!

Boy and Bot Island: A Story of the Galápagos

It's time to pick a winner!  Vote from these titles that I read in class and tell me why you think it should win. I'm going to grade your paragraph, so be careful with how you type it up and make sure you add your name.  If you'd like to write your paragraph on paper instead, feel free to do so.  The paragraph needs to be 5-7 sentences.  Your topic sentence will be your choice with the title (capitalized and underlined if you're writing on paper - don't worry about underlining the title if you write the paragraph on the blog) and author/illustrator.  Then give a brief 1-3 sentence summary.  Follow that up with the reasons why it is your top pick (review the qualities of a Caldecott winner in your notebook) in 2-3 sentences.  End your paragraph with a closing sentence.  This is similar to the practice ones you wrote in your notebook.  Review your best ones to remember how to write a good one!  You may pick up to THREE honor winners, too.  You just need to tell me the title and author/illustrator for those - no paragraphs.  It's hard to pick - so many good ones!  Feel free to read one again if you need to refresh your memory.  I have all of them available in the classroom.  Your paragraph is due on Monday, January 14th.

  1. My favorite Caldecott contender is This Is Not My Hat by Jon Klassen. The book is about a minnow who steals a whale’s hat. The minnow thinks that the whale will not notice because the hat is very small and the whale is asleep. The fish keeps on thinking that the whale will not notice until the whale comes up to him in seaweed and eats him and gets his hat back. I really like this book because it’s funny and because the whale looks hilarious with his hat on. I also like it because it has cartoon drawings which gives it a cartoony feeling. Jackson Huecker

  2. The book that I think should win the Caldecott medal is Nightsong by Ari Berk and Loren Long. It is about a little bat going out into the world on his own. I chose it because I like the way the illustrator made the bat more lovable. I also chose it because I love the book. I think Nightsong is the best book in the world. My three honor winners are Green by Laura Vaccaro Seeger,This Is Not My Hat by Jon Klassen, and One Cool Friend by Toni Buzzeo and David Small. This Is From Reece

  3. the book that stood out most to me was Chloe And The Lion by Mac Barnett and pictures by Adam Rex. This is a book about a story gone wrong; and a fight over a dragon sets it all off. Then at the end friendship takes place. And that's why I love it. This book's words were not only amazing as so are the pictures as well. I liked the clay figures they added to the book in many ways. I loved how the words go with the pictures. This book should get the Caldecott medal.

  4. The book I liked the best was Another Brother by Matthew Cordell. It is about a little sheep dealing with his little brothers. He keeps getting more and more brothers that follow his every move. I picked this book because it has a lot of humor.I can relate because I would copy my brother when I was little. That is why I had picked this book.

  6. The book I vote for is One Cool friend by Tony Buzzeo because I think It's very funny how the dad doesn't realize that Elliott he bought a real penguin. I love how he made the illustrations. They look soooo cool. This book is very awesome! I like how he made his characters. I like how they made Elliott's hair. The dad looks like he might be Scottish. I hope this book will win

  7. I think that Each Kindness by Jacqueline Woodson should win. It is about a girl that moves into a new school and other people are mean to her. She gets lonely and her family moves. The Girl that was the meanest to her feels bad because she never got a chance to be nice to her and then it just ends. I think it should win because it will teach kids to be nice to other kids. It should also win because of the pictures. They are really detailed. I love this book and hope it wins!

  8. My favorite Caldecott contender is Unspoken by Henry Cole. It's about a little girl who finds an escaped slave in the barn. She doesn't know what to do, but she decides to help him out by bringing him food. The people who own the slave come by the farm, asking if they knew where the slave was. After the owners leave the little girl checks on the slave and he is gone so the knows he has escaped. I really liked this book because it was a cool story but told without words. The pictures were really good and detailed. This book shows that people have to go through a lot before they can grasp their freedom. My three runner-ups are Z is for Moose Kelley Bingham, Bully by Patricia Paloco and Chloe and the Lion by Mac Barnett. These books are good but none of them are as good as Unspoken!

  9. My favorite Caldecott book is Green by Laura Vaccaro Seeger. It is about the color green in the world. I like this book because it has cut outs in the pictures. They go perfectly with the colors on the other page. That must be hard to do. I say Green is the Caldecott winner!

  10. My choice is This is Not my My Hat. This is Not My Hat is about a fish stealing a whale's hat. The fish thinks the whale won't find out. But the whale does the exact opposite of what the fish is saying. I chose this book because it is funny. The whale is doing the exact opposite of what the fish is thinking. For example the fish says "He probably isn't following me", then the whale starts following him. I think this book should win the Caldecott.

  11. My favorite Caldecott contender is One Cool Friend by Tony Buzzio. It is about a boy who went to the zoo, and asks his dad for a penguin. His dad thought the boy meant a stuffed penguin, but really the boy meant a REAL penguin. Through out the book the dad still thinks he is talking about a stuffed penguin. At the end, the dads goes into the bathroom, where the penguin is. At first (for a few seconds), the dad is suprised. But then you realize the dad was talking about someone named Captain Cook. Captain Cook turned out to be a GIANT TURTLE and the dad was fine with the boy keeping the penguin. The pictures are REALLY detailed and they're very interesting because on almost every page, you can try to see the turtle. Also, in one of the pages, the dad has pajama's with turtles on them. It made me laugh out loud. this book and I think it should win because it is really, really, funny. I do hope it wins!!!

  12. I really like the book This is Not My Hat by Jon Klassen because it's really funny and the illustrations are really good. This book is about a small fish who stole a hat from the big fish and ran away from him thinking the big fish wouldn't notice. But of course, it did, and the big fish chased after him. I really liked the part where the little fish said, "And he probably won't wake up for a long time," but the big fish had already woken up. I also like how the book wouldn't be funny without the pictures because the little fish explains how he thinks the big fish won't notice, but we see the big fish noticing it. This is Not My Hat should be the Caldecott winner!

  13. I vote for Bear Has A Story To Tell written by Phillip C. Stead illustrated by Erin E. Stead for the Caldecott winner. I choose this book because the illustrations are really detailed with the facial expresions. The paint colors blend in really well. The illustrations are very calming. I think the illustrator tried to create that mood because it is almost winter and all the creatures are about to hibernate. I also think the illustations have a little bit of a lonely feeling too because Bear is asking all the creatures he runs into in the forest if they can listen to his story. They say they can't so Bear just gets lonelier. I love the illustrations. This book is about a bear who is about to hibernate but he wants to tell a story first. He asks all the creatures if they want to listen to his story. They say they don't have time on their paws so Bear goes to sleep and gets to tell his story when it is spring. I love this book and I think this book should win the Caldecott Award.

  14. I chose Unspoken by Henry Cole as my vote for Caldecott because I like the fact that it has no words but has a really interesting story. The book Unspoken is about a girl who found a slave in a shack near her house. The slave had escaped, and was being looked for.The girl starts to take care of the slave, and tells nobody about them.Every night, she brings the slave extra food from dinner. One night,a man comes looking for the slave. The girl goes to the shack to check on the slave, and he isn't there. Then she notices the slave left her a corn husk doll as a sign he is okay. I like the symbolism in the book. For example, the corn husk doll symbolized gratefulness and friendship. I think this book should win the Caldecott. Mira

  15. I chose Oh NO Not Again! by Mac Barnett. That story is about a girl who gets an answer wrong on her history test. She goes back in time to change history so her answer would be right. Then cavemen mess with her time machine and they change almost everything in history! When she gets back she got her answer wright but all the other answers were wrong. I liked thid this book because it's funny and it makes kids laugh. I also liked this book because I thought the illustrations were cool. I liked all the color and how the girl was drawn. The girl's hair had streaks in it like real human hair. think this book should win the Caldecott.

  16. My choice for Caldecott is Green by Laura Vaccaro Seeger because the illustrations have shape holes that create one thing on one page and another on the next page.Green is about all the different types of green. It has light greens, dark greens, lime greens. In the background there are cut out shapes on the front page and back page.I think it is my top choice is Green because I have never seen a book about just one color. It is very creative in the illustration.

  17. I chose Goldilocks and the Three Dinosaurs by Mo Willems as my vote for Caldecott because The book Goldilocks and the Three Dinosaurs is like Goldilocks and the Three Bears with a twist. I like the fact that the author put the pidgeon from the Pidgeon books. I liked that the author put the pidgeon in random places. One reason I want this book to win is I liked how Goldilocks seemed like a mouse in the house. I think this book should win the Caldecott.

  18. My favorite book was ONE COOL FRIEND BY Tony Buzzeo, illustrated by David Small.ONE COOL FRIEND is about a boy who is a proper gentleman and one day his dad asks if he would like to go to the zoo and he says yes, not wanting to hurt his feelings. So when they got to the zoo he skips all the crowds of kids and goes to the penguin exhibit. When he saw them he thought they looked like him so he raced back and asked his dad for one and he said yes and they have a lot of fun.I liked it because it was a bit like a comic book because it had talking bubbles.I liked the pictures because he outlined everything in blue and he makes the experessions really good. Some of the books where good but nothing beats ONE COOL FRIEND.

He keeps on disturbing the outher people in the play. Then when his turn comes mouse is for m and Moose gets really mad. When z comes zebra the play director makes z Zebra's friend Moose.I like this book because it's crazy and funny. 20. My favorite book was Z is for Moose by Kelly Bingham and Paulo Zelinsky.Moose wants to be in the alphabet play,so he keeps interrupting. But when it comes to the letter "M" he doesn't get his turn.So he makes all the other letters for moose.I picked this book because it reminded me of my puppy Jasmine[we call her Moose]and she gets in the way of things. This book was really humorous. It also had cute and simple illustrations. The book showed Moose's emotions and this is why I think this book should win the Caldecoot award.

  21. Chloe And The Lion By Mac Barnett is my choice to win the Caldecott medal.
This book is about an author who is writing a book.He gets mad at an illustrator and fires him,he goes through multiple ilustrators. But at the end he forgives his first illustrator. They work together and finish the book.I chose this book because it hilarious, and fun to read. For example, I liked when the author tried to be the illustrator and failed. I enjoyed every second of this book. This is why I chose this book.

  22. I vote for Z Is For Moose by Kelly Bingham as my vote for Caldecott because it was very funny. This book is about a moose that is in an alaphabet play and he really wants his turn. Then the zebra says mouse instead of moose and the moose goes crazy.I loved how the author made it seem like a little kids' book and then makes it totally funny. When the author says mouse instead of moose I loved how the pictures showed the moose crossing out the other stuff, giving them moose antlers, and writing MOOSE.I think this book shoud win the Caldecott.

  23. I picked Chloe and the Lion by Mac Barnett as my vote for Caldecott because it is super funny. It's a story about Chloe who was walking in the woods and sees a lion. But then the author and illustrator stop everything and argue. Mac Barnett is super creative because he put himself and Alex Rex ( illustrator )in the book. Also I like how they stopped everything so they could talk in the book. I think it should win because it's humorous. It has cool illustrations and I love how they stop and talk then change Chloe to a dragon. Cross your fingers that Chloe and the Lion win!!!!!!!

That is why I picked this book for the Caldecott award.

  25. I voted for Nightsong written and illustrated by Loren Long.Bat was going out to hunt for himself for the first time ever;he is scared but his mother tells him that if he sings the nightsong it will guide his way through the dark creepy night.Bat goes out and sees all sorts of things he has a great time thanks to the nightsong.I think that it should win because it is illustrated to make the bat look young and adorable so people have more empathy for him.I liked it because Bat was made to not look like a bat. I also liked how it made the song like a flashlight to guide his way.

I think "Chloe and the Lion" by Mac Barnett and pictures by Adam Rex.It is about a girl,Chloe who is an explorer and gets lost in woods. She is supposed to meet a lion, but meets a dragon instead! So the author and ilistater get into a fight! The pictures are important because shows the fight and brings humor. This is a very inovative book.I think the judges will praise it!

  30. I chose CHLOE AND THE LOIN by Mac Barnett.

CHOLE AND THE LION is a story about a girl who picks up change to go buy merry go round tickets. But the illustrator draws a dragon not a lion and they start arguuing and so the author gets a new illustrator who messes up the story. In the end he forgives the original illustrator. I choose this book beacause it is a hilarious book. It also has amazing pictures.

  34. My favorite book was "Bear has a Story to Tell" by Phillip C. Stead. I chose this book because I thought it was silly and funny that Bear waited through hibernation to tell everyone his story then he got everyone to pay attention but then realized he forgot his story. I give this story 5 stars! I really liked the illustrations because they were very detailed in how he/she drew the animals. I think this book should win because it is amusing and entertaining. I will recommend this to my home room teacher Mrs.Westley because she likes reading picture books.

  35. My choice book for Caldecott was Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore by William Joyce. This book is about a man who loves to read. But one day Morris is sitting on his chair outside when a horrible storm rings out and all the words in his book gets erased. After the storm is over, Morris finds a lady who gives him a book that's ALIVE, and the book leads him to a wonderful library with lots of flying books. I picked this book because the books in the library had so many cool features. I also picked it because it changed color like when the book was sad, the page was gray and when the book was happy, the page was colorful. That is why I picked Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore for Calecott.

  36. The book I chose to be the Caldecott winner is One Cool Friend by Toni Buzzeo and illustrated by David Small. This book is about a kid whose father doesn't pay much attention to him. When they go to the aquarium, the child asked for a penguin and his father thought he meant a toy penquin so he gave him $20. Instead, the boy takes a real penguin who ends up being the boy's best friend. It is my favorite book because the boy does a lot of things with the penguin, but the Dad doesn't notice any of it. I also enjoyed it because I really animals and I thought it was neat how the boy had a new friend in the penguin. One Cool Friend really lives up to its name!

My honor books are Z is for Moose, Another Brother, and A Home for Bird.

  37. The book I chose as the 2013 Caldecott winner is The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore by William Joyce and illustrated by Joe Bluhm. This book is about a man who loves to read and write. All of a sudden a huge storm comes and whips all the words and letters out of his life story. He is suddenly really depressed. He comes across a lady flying with some books. He follows her favorite book to a library and brings joy to people, children and of course books. He spends the rest of his life and dies in the library. I think this book should win the Caldecott because it brings out your imagination by making people and books fly. Another reason is because when Mr.Lessmore was sad the pages were gray and gloomy and when he was happy they were bright and colorful. I thought that was very creative. That is the book I picked for the 2013 Caldecott winner. My honor book is Each Kindness.

  38. I choose One Cool Friend by Toni Buzzeo and illustrated by David Small to be the Caldecott winner. I enjoyed this book about Elliott, a proper boy who goes to the aquarium with his dad and brings home a live penguin instead of the stuffed toy his dad gave him money to buy. Elliott hides the smallest penguin from the exibit in his backpack, and they have fun doing things together. They become good friends. Elliott's dad finds out about the penguin when he goes to take a bath and the penguin is enjoying the cold water in the bathtub. His dad is surprised!!! This book was funny and entertaining.

  39. wow! I can't beleve it's time to vote. My Caldecott winner that I chose is Unspoken by Henry Cole. This book was about a little girl who worked on a farm and one day she found a runaway slave in the barn. That night she didn't tell anyone about the slave and she was glad she kept it a secret because people came looking for the slave the next day. later that night she found that the slave had left, but had made her a doll out of the things that the girl had brought food on. I loved how the book was told through expressions in the drawings. It was also kind of ironic because the Sunday before we went to school and read Unspoken I went to the Freedom Center where I learned all about the slaves and all that. I can't wait to see who wins the Caldecott medal.

  40. I choose The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr Lessmore. It is about a man who loves to read. Then one day a huge storm sweeps him and his diary/journal up and turns his life "upside down". 1:HELLO HELLO
    2:Z IS FOR MOOSE
    3:NIGHTSONG

  41. My 3 questions are:
Do people not care that there is a gorilla who was stuck in a cage for 27 years?
Why did it take people so long to protest?
How do people react that there is a gorilla who can paint?
