Talking about Wonder

Wonder

Welcome to our first class blog about our read aloud, Wonder, by R.J. Palacio!  I'll be posting here every day to tell you what chapter we're on, and what we're thinking, writing about, and discussing.  Please post comments to the blog about what YOU'RE thinking while listening, if you're a student, and what you thought when you read these chapters, if you're a parent or part of school staff.  The more participants, the merrier!

Monday, September 10th:  JFB has read through the chapter "Jack Will, Julian, and Charlotte," and SLE and KME are on the chapter, "Locks."

We've talked about Julian and what kind of person he is.  We also discussed predictions about what Auggie's first day is going to be like.  We've discussed Auggie's parents and Via a bit, too, and how they deal with Auggie's disorder.  We're going to be talking about empathy and what happens when we read about characters that may be very different from us.  How will feeling empathy toward Auggie affect how we relate to real people who may be different?

What are your thoughts about the characters we've been introduced to so far?  How are you feeling about Auggie going to school?  What would it be like to be his parents or his sibling?

  1. I love Charlotte! She stood up to Julian! I wonder though if she'll be confident enough to stand up for Auggie once she's around her friends.

  2. I've always felt like a big part of my job as a parent is to protect my child. I can't imagine how hard it must be for Auggie's parents to want to protect him, yet do what's best for him, even if it brings pain.

  3. Caleb likes the way Auggie tells about his like and how he feels about it from his own perspective. He's telling us what he's been through. It makes it feel more personal.

  4. First person point of view is one of my favorite perspectives! I agree with Caleb- it DOES make it feel more personal. You feel like you're walking with him down the halls of that school. It also increases tension because you don't know what other characters are going to do. When we showed the book trailer, everyone noticed how it was shown without seeing his face - it was filmed slightly behind Auggie. We could talk about how that's just like first person narrative writing. In the trailer, we saw the world the way Auggie sees it - just like the book!

  11. Thanks, Garrett, for that tip!! I think you're very insightful when you say that Julian may have stuff he's dealing with, too, and that's why he's bullying Auggie.

  18. McKenna and Audrey,
It really was awful when Auggie overheard Jack say those things about him. It'll be interesting to hear what Via has to say and learn her story! No, Audrey, Wonder was R.J. Palacio's first novel! Aren't you excited about what she might write next?!

  22. Auggie doesn't care when anyone says anything foul about him. I WONDER why he got so upset when Jack Will said mean things about him. (From Mirabelle.)

    1. Mira,
I think Auggie felt betrayed by Jack because he was supposed to be his friend. When other people say mean things it doesn't matter as much because they're not his true friends. Jack was supposed to be on his side. It must've been terrible for Auggie to hear Jack say those things when he trusted him. Don't you wish you could hear Jack's side of the story?
